Maroš Šefčovič is a Slovak diplomat who has served as European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security; Interinstitutional Relations and Transparency since 1 December 2024. In this role, he leads the EU’s work on free and fair trade policy, economic security, and a modern customs system supporting competitiveness, sustainability, and a level playing field for businesses.
European affairs have been central to his career for over two decades. He was Vice-President of the European Commission from 2010 to 2019, responsible for Interinstitutional Relations, Administration, and later the Energy Union. In 2019, he became Vice-President for Interinstitutional Relations and Foresight, and in 2023 also served as Executive Vice-President overseeing the European Green Deal. He was a Member of the European Parliament from 2014.
Previously, he served as European Commissioner for Education, Training, Culture and Youth (2009–2010) and as Slovakia’s Permanent Representative to the EU (2004–2009). A career diplomat, he served in Zimbabwe, Canada, and as Ambassador to Israel.
Mr Šefčovič holds degrees from Comenius University in Bratislava and MGIMO in Moscow, and undertook diplomatic training at Stanford University.
